Dave's Lessons for People ver. 00.05.14 -- Part 2: Guitar Chord
(c)2000 David Raleigh Arnold. Make 1000 or less free with this notice.

The first four chords are on the 1st four strings. Use 3rd *or* 4th finger for the G chord. You usually want to learn the easiest practical way of fingering a chord first. Don't be too particular. Keep listening, keep trying, and keep the fingers moving. Bend the wrist out (away from the neck) as necessary. Never bend the wrist inward. All you need i persistence and a capacity to withstand pain.

You can get a rock beat by playing eighth notes down and up, accenting
slightly the 2nd and 4th beats. All flavors of country music in 4/4
accent the 2nd beat. When you are playing chords down and up, play fewer
notes on the way up than you play on the way down.

Get the chord with the left hand and play the first note with the right hand at
the same time on count 1 (and 3). Play the chord with the right hand on beat 2
(and 4). Practice this in two different ways:

* Keeping the RH thumb on the 5th string, play notes by closing the index
finger and chords by striking downward across the strings with it. Only the
index plays anything.

* Playing the same thing, but the thumb plays the (4) string, index (3), middle
(2), and annular (ring) (1).

If you are interested in flamenco, get peel and stick protectors for the top,
or you will quickly drill a hole through it. The important basics to practice
to learn *rasgeado* can be reduced to a short list. Don't use the wrist and try
to keep RH from moving, except IYJ, the easy one, called the "fan".

        * IYJ % % = can be learned in a hurry, if you make a gun with RH.
        * I! J I! J I! = tap (golpe) top with annular as you strike with index.
	                             same time as I.
        * I! J! I! J! I! = also tap (golpe) top with thumb as you index up.
        * QAMIJ I = Smooth quintuplet roll followed by strike on the beat.
        * IJQAM I and IJQAM IJQAM I = Same.
        * QAMI JQAM I and QAMI QAMI QAMI JQAM I = Smooth 16th note roll.
        * IQAM IQAM I = Same.
        * I! J M I! J M I! J I! J I! J I! = These are beats, not 16ths.
        * Put taps on the ends of all the rolls which end with I.

The flat pick is simple to use, but limits your ability to move from one string
to another. Place the little finger on the top and bend the wrist outward
enough so that you can move up and down with rotation (pronation) of the arm.
Curl the index finger well to avoid ripping off the fingernail.

----- Barre Chords. *No open strings* -----
For most people, to barre is the hardest thing that they ever have to learn on
the guitar. If your strings are steel, use a set with a 1st string 0.010" in
diameter. Practice the barre as a series of steps:
    1. Position the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers, and not the first.
    2. Straighten the 1st finger. Bend the wrist out as much as necessary.
    3. Place it near the fret and parallel to it, keeping it straight, and
       putting a knuckle between the strings that need pressure the most.
    4. Apply pressure slowly, keeping the other fingers in place.
